A cold war romance that simmers.
Director Pael Palikoski's follow up to Academy Award Best Foreign Film winner Ida (2013) is a star-crossed romance. In Cold War, musician Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) discovers singer Zula (Joanna Kulig), falls madly in love and a Polish star is born.
The
traditional Polish songs Zula sings are in danger of being lost in post
WWII times under Soviet rule. When their successful show is told to
create "a strong number about the leader of the world proletariat,"
Wiktor and Zula's future choices set the full story in motion. As a
country is clinging to its identity, we see these two struggle to stay
true to their own. It's a love story that spans decades of change, and
it's a love story for the ages.
In a nutshell: Stunning black and white cinema. A dynamo actress. Jazzy torch songs. A brisk 89 minute romance. Cold War is the perfect film to heat up your winter.
Award potential: Cold
War scored Oscars nominations for Best Director (bumping Bradley
Cooper's A Star Is Born), and Best Foreign Film. Both of those awards
will likely go to Roma.
The Ten Buck Review: Worth ten bucks.
