Enchanted April (1992)

April may be the month of foolish jokes, taxes and spring allergies. But for me, April is the month I rewatch Enchanted April, a sleepy little film from 1992 that most people missed in the theater.

Four British women rent a chateau on a remote Italian island in this sophisticated romantic comedy from director Mike Newell (Four Weddings And A Funeral, Mona Lisa Smile). While at the Italian seaside, each character finds their own place to bloom. It’s a lushly produced film that invites viewers to soak up the same sunshine.

The cast reads like one of your favorite Brit films or plays: Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Jim Broadbent, Alfred Molina and Josie Watckins — and each scene could be a painting itself. I watch this breezy gem every April. Trust me; it’s charming enough for you to do the same.

In a nutshell: A charming film that serves as a substitute for taking a little mini-trip to Italy.

Award potential: It was nominated for some 1993 Golden Globe acting awards for Miranda Richardson and Joan Plowright but never hit the Academy’s radar.
