Stream 4 out of 5 Best Documentary Feature Oscar nominees now

This year's Oscar nominees in the Best Documentary Feature category will take you around the world — other than the fact that you can watch all but one on your couch tonight.

American Factory
When GM closed a plant in Ohio, the community struggled for jobs. Enter Chinese company Fuyao Glass who bought the plant, brought business to the town, and let cameras film the culture clash. This is the first film from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions.
(Streaming on Netflix)

Honeyland
This documentary about beekeepers in North Macedonia is the first film to be nominated for both Documentary Feature and Best International Feature (formerly the Best Foreign Language Film award). Cameras follow three years in the secret life of beekeeper Hatidze Muratova, her mom, a nomad family and a community that relies vividly on the ecosystem. Low on excitement, but quietly powerful. This beekeeper film gets an A+
(Streaming on Hulu)

The Edge of Democracy

Witness the rise and fall of a nation as cameras have amazing access to Brazilian democracy in crisis. Filmmaker Petra Costa narrates the film in a voice that I found distracting (a drunk Christine Baranski, I swear), but unique access to President Lula da Silva and successor Dilma Rousseff make this a must-see.
(Streaming on Hulu)

For Sama
As the title suggests, this is a love letter to someone named Sama. Sama is daughter to al-Kateab, a Syrian who experienced falling in love, marriage and having a baby in contrast to her city crumbling. Part journalism, part view to life on the other side of the world, it’s a powerful story of defying tyranny.
(Available on your online PBS, plus Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu and more)

The Cave
I have not yet seen this National Geographic film which is also set in Syria. The cave in The Cave is a subterranean, underground hospital and it is run by Dr. Amani Ballour who must contend with a patriarchal culture in addition to threats of chemical attack and the sounds of war.
(In select theaters.)
